“And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,
Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men”  —  Luke 2:13-14

I don’t know about you, but it seems life is coming at me way too fast, one day blurring into another. In a season where peace should reign, I sometimes feel overwhelmed with everything that needs to be done. The sense of peace and balance in my live goes away and I am left feeling as through my spirit is empty.

A few years ago, I took a photo on a family vacation of a magnificent waterfall. Each time I look at that photo, I remember the rugged terrain that we had walked through to get to that beautiful spot and how the scene was calm and peaceful even as the water tumbled down and rushed past the very rock we were sitting on. The photo serves as a reminder that we can let anxiety and troubles fall away. As I look at the rock we were sitting on I am reminded that God is our rock and salvation amid the rushing waters of life.

Peace is one of the greatest gifts the Lord has given to us! In Isaiah 9:6, the prophet Isaiah foretold of the peace we would experience upon Christ’s arrival. On any given day we experience many emotions and sometimes those emotions will try to rule our hearts. This happens when we spend too much time being anxious, angry or fearful. But the good news is that we have the power within us to choose between letting our emotions rule us, or letting the Prince of Peace fill our hearts and mind with the promises He has made to us.

What about you? Are you letting the hustle and bustle of the holidays rob you of that peace? If you are, I pray that you will slow down and enjoy the beauty around you and let God’s peace rush through your life.

Activity:

Take some time to be still this Christmas. Turn off all distractions (cell phones, tv, music, etc), dim the lights and sit with your family by the Christmas tree. Tell God that you love Him. Thank Him for the perfect peace He gives. Listen to what God may be whispering to you. Afterwards, share with each other what you learned or experienced in the stillness.

Prayer:

Dear Father, you know the anxiety and troubles that threaten to take away the peace that You promise us. You are the Prince of Peace. Help us take the time to seek the peace that you offer. Thank you for the calm that we find only in you. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Merry Christmas!
